The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any significant honors show draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
